How much does a funeral cost in Glasgow?

A simple funeral with cremation, which adds a short service, a hearse and a funeral director on the day, is usually £1,800 to £3,200. A traditional funeral with burial typically runs from £3,500 to £6,500, before the cost of the grave.
These are realistic local ranges. The figure any one family pays depends on the funeral director, the choices made, and fees charged by others such as the crematorium or cemetery.

A direct cremation is a complete and dignified choice, not a lesser one. Many families hold their own gathering afterwards, at home or somewhere that mattered to the person, once the pressure of the first weeks has passed.
Funeral director fees and third-party fees
Your total cost has two parts:
- The funeral director's own fee: their care of the person, staff, premises, the coffin, the hearse, and arranging everything. This is the part you compare on Farewell Compare.
- Third-party fees (disbursements): money the funeral director collects and passes on. In the Glasgow area this includes the cremation fee (roughly £850 to £1,000 at the time of writing), or a burial lair and interment fee, which for a new lair can run well into four figures. It may also include a minister's or celebrant's fee and, sometimes, a doctor's fee.
Why prices vary so much
Two funeral directors a mile apart can differ by more than a thousand pounds. Common reasons:
- Overheads: a large branch on a main road costs more to run than a modest unit.
- Coffin range: the standard coffin included makes a real difference.
- Cars: whether a following limousine is included or extra.
- Chain or independent: neither is automatically dearer, but pricing structures differ.
- Level of service: some firms deliberately arrange fewer funerals and charge more for a more personal service.
None of this means a higher price is being unfair, or that a lower price means less care. It means comparing is worthwhile.

- Funeral Support Payment: a payment from Social Security Scotland for people on certain benefits who are responsible for a funeral. It helps with burial or cremation fees and a set amount towards other costs. Apply within six months of the funeral.
- Council services: if there is genuinely no one able to pay, the local authority has a duty to arrange a funeral.
- The person's estate: a bank will usually release money directly to the funeral director from the deceased's account to pay the bill, even before probate.
- Trade unions, employers and some insurance policies may include a funeral benefit. It is worth checking old paperwork.
Straightforward ways to keep costs down
- Ask for the published price list, and for a full written quote before agreeing anything.
- Consider a direct cremation with a separate gathering later.
- Choose a weekday morning service, which some crematoria price lower.
- Keep the coffin simple; it is seen only briefly.
- Ask friends to bring garden flowers rather than ordering large arrangements.
- Hold the reception at home or in a community hall rather than a hired venue.
There is no right amount to spend. A modest funeral is not a lesser goodbye, and a family that chooses a fuller one has nothing to explain.
