Privacy policy
This policy explains what happens to personal data when you use Farewell Compare. In short: the website has no database and stores nothing itself. If you fill in one of our contact forms, the details are sent as an email through a third-party service and delivered to an inbox — nothing else.
Who we are
Farewell Compare (“we”, “us”) is an independent funeral-price comparison website for the Glasgow area, at farewellcompare.co.uk. It is run by an individual based in the United Kingdom, not by a company. For the purposes of UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018), the site’s operator is the data controller for the personal data described below.
Contact for anything to do with privacy or your data: igermanoff2@gmail.com.
When you just read the site
Farewell Compare is a set of static pages. It does not ask you to sign in, it sets no cookies of its own, and it does not run analytics or advertising trackers. We do not build a profile of you or track you across other sites.
As with any website, some page content is loaded from other companies’ servers, and those companies will see your device’s IP address and basic technical information as a normal part of delivering that content:
- Our hosting provider, which serves the pages and keeps standard server logs.
- Google Fonts (
fonts.googleapis.com,fonts.gstatic.com) for the site’s typefaces. - jsDelivr (
cdn.jsdelivr.net), a content-delivery network, for the small script used by the email feature below. - Unsplash (
images.unsplash.com) for the photographs.
We do not control what those companies do with server-log data; see their own privacy notices. We are working to reduce these dependencies by serving fonts and images from our own domain.
When you ask us to email you a price summary
On the results page and on each funeral director’s page there is an optional “email me this” feature. If you use it, you provide:
- the email address you type in; and
- we generate a summary of the prices shown, which is sent to that address.
Your email address is used for one purpose only: to send you that single message. It is not added to any mailing list, it is not used for marketing, and we do not keep a copy on the website. The message is sent from your browser using EmailJS, a third-party email service (see “Third parties” below).
Lawful basis: your consent (you choose to enter your address and press send).
When you use the “Get listed” form (funeral directors)
If you are a funeral director applying to be listed, the form collects: business name, your name, your role, email address, phone number, premises address and postcode, number of locations, website, a link to your published price list, and any message you add.
These details are sent to us by email (again via EmailJS) and used to assess and set up your listing and to contact you about it. They are not used for anything else and are not shared with third parties except the email service that delivers the message.
Lawful basis: our legitimate interests (and yours) in considering and managing a business listing you have asked for; where you provide extra detail voluntarily, your consent.
Third parties that handle data for us
- EmailJS — transmits the contents of the contact forms as an email. EmailJS is based in the United States, so submitting a form involves a transfer of personal data outside the UK. That transfer relies on the safeguards in EmailJS’s own terms and applicable data-transfer mechanisms. Please review the EmailJS privacy policy for how it handles and retains message data.
- Our email inbox provider — where messages sent through the “Get listed” form are received and read.
- Our hosting provider — serves the site and keeps standard access logs.
Our hosting provider is Netlify (privacy policy). The inbox for the “Get listed” form is a Microsoft Outlook account (privacy statement).
How long we keep things
The website itself keeps nothing. Emails generated by the price-summary feature are sent to you and are not retained by us. “Get listed” enquiries are kept in our inbox only for as long as needed to deal with the enquiry and to run any resulting listing, and are then deleted. EmailJS and our providers apply their own retention periods to message and log data.
Cookies
Farewell Compare sets no cookies. It uses no analytics, advertising or social-media cookies. If this ever changes, this policy will be updated and, where required, we will ask for your consent first.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- ask what personal data we hold about you and get a copy;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- have your data erased;
- restrict or object to our processing;
- withdraw consent at any time (this does not affect anything done beforehand); and
- data portability, where it applies.
To exercise any of these, email igermanoff2@gmail.com. In practice, because we do not run a database, the main thing we can act on is a message sitting in our inbox — we will find and delete it on request.
Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
Children
The site is intended for adults arranging or researching a funeral. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it was last changed. Material changes will be noted on this page.
